Volunteer Food Network Expands as Demand Outpaces Donations
A network of neighborhood pantries added distribution days after visits rose sharply, but coordinators warn the supply chain is fragile.

Crates of produce arrive before sunrise, and the line forms before the volunteers finish sorting. Coordinators say weekly visits have risen by nearly a third compared with the previous year.
To keep pace, three pantries in the district added a second distribution day and shifted to an appointment system that reduced sidewalk waits and made intake data far more reliable.
That data matters. With clearer counts, coordinators were able to show funders exactly where demand was concentrated and secured two grants that had previously been declined.
Still, supply remains uneven. A single missed delivery can reshape an entire week, and organizers are pushing for standing agreements rather than one time donations.
